YouTube's third-party AI training setting: what turning it on actually allows
The setting is off by default and gives selected companies permission to train their models. It does not create a personal model or arrange payment.

YouTube’s third-party AI training setting lets you permit selected outside companies to use eligible videos to train the AI models they are building. It is off by default. Turning it on does not create a model for you, give you ownership of another company’s model or arrange a payment.
That is the decision to understand before choosing a company from the list. The details below follow YouTube’s current help page, checked in October 2026.
What does the permission cover?
For a creator using Studio, the setting applies to eligible videos uploaded to the channel. YouTube describes eligibility in terms of public videos, applicable rights-holder permission and compliance with its terms and guidelines. It is not simply permission for one video you happen to have open.
You can choose listed companies or allow all third-party companies. YouTube explains that the all-companies choice can include companies that are not currently listed. If your intent is to authorize only specific companies, that difference matters.
What it does not settle
| Question | What the setting tells you |
|---|---|
| May a selected company use eligible videos for its model training? | That is the permission the setting addresses |
| Will the company actually use your content? | Permission does not establish actual use |
| Will you receive payment? | The setting itself does not arrange it |
| Will you receive a personal model? | The setting does not provide one |
| What can you do with a resulting model? | That needs its own agreement and product offering |
A creator considering a commercial arrangement should keep the training permission and the commercial terms distinct. A checkbox cannot answer a question that belongs in a separate agreement.
Where do you review or change the setting?
YouTube says channel owners can view and change it in channel settings in YouTube Studio. Rights holders using Studio Content Manager have a corresponding setting there.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to your channel settings.
- Compare the controls you see with YouTube’s help page, since screenshots in older tutorials may show a previous version.
- Choose specific listed companies or all third-party companies.
- Keep a dated record of the companies you selected and why.
- Allow up to seven days for the public permission interface to reflect the update.
Changing the setting is not proof that a third party has reversed every earlier use.
A channel connection is another decision
Connecting YouTube to a creator application involves an authorization screen describing access to your account. The application’s policies explain how it uses the information it receives. This is separate from the training choice inside Studio. Veri’s guide to connecting your channels shows where that authorization happens in Veri.
Veri is a Creator Co-Pilot powered by a model you own. Its Privacy Policy states that data received through platform APIs is not used to train AI models, and it describes opt-in personal-model learning separately. You should not turn on a broad third-party training permission simply because you want to try a creator assistant.
If you want a model trained from content you own and can authorize, start with what you want help doing and the permission you are comfortable giving. Our Privacy policy explains how Veri handles that choice.
You can explore Veri to develop a draft or ask about your own content. Keep the permission tied to the use you intend, and expect a separate explanation whenever a product asks to do something more with your videos.
Frequently asked questions
Is YouTube's third-party AI training setting on by default?
No, YouTube says the setting is off by default. If you do not want to allow this use through the setting, you do not need to turn it on.
Does YouTube pay me for enabling third-party training?
YouTube's help page says it is not currently facilitating payments between creators or rights holders and third-party companies. A separate commercial agreement is a different matter.
How quickly does a changed permission take effect?
YouTube says changes can take up to seven days to appear in the publicly accessible permission interface. That is not a promise about undoing prior use by a third party.
Do I need to enable this setting to connect YouTube to Veri?
No, the setting and a channel connection are separate permissions. Veri's Privacy Policy states that data received through platform APIs is not used to train AI models.
