Custom GPT vs personal model: what should a creator keep?
Compare reusable instructions with personal-model participation by the task you need help with, the choices you can keep and the control you have.
On this page
A custom GPT keeps the instructions and reference files you write, though OpenAI now limits who can create one and plans to retire them. In Veri, you keep preferences about your voice and style that you can review and correct, and building a personal model is a separate opt-in. Keep whichever setup gives you scripts you want to record.
Veri is a Creator Co-Pilot powered by a model you own. Start with a recurring job, such as writing an opening from your notes, and notice what you keep correcting. Your own experience with the draft is a better reason to change tools than a product label.
How does a custom GPT compare with a personal model?
A custom GPT applies your instructions and files to each chat, while Veri keeps preferences you save and correct and treats personal-model training as a separate choice.
| What you are comparing | Custom GPT | Saved preferences and a personal model in Veri |
|---|---|---|
| How it learns your style | Instructions you write, applied to every conversation, plus up to 20 knowledge files | Preferences saved from your corrections and choices, which you review in Your Model |
| How you change it | Edit the instructions or files, and use version history to restore an earlier version | Correct a preference, mark what fits, or ask in chat for a choice to be remembered |
| Who can set one up | Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces with permission; personal accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs | Available in Your Model during free early access |
| What it can do around the draft | Capabilities such as web search, image generation and canvas | Agents for scripts, titles, thumbnails and clips, connected to your own channels |
| Model training | Knowledge files are source material the GPT uses during a conversation | Personal-model participation is a separate opt-in, and a request does not mean a trained model has been delivered |

What does a custom GPT keep?
A custom GPT keeps instructions that apply to every conversation, up to 20 knowledge files and the capabilities you turn on, according to OpenAI’s GPT documentation. Projects keep related chats, files and instructions together. Both can be useful ways to return to your own material.
If that setup gives you scripts you want to record, keep it. If you spend every session finding the same references and repeating the same corrections, that is the part to improve.
Read the current product notice before building around a custom GPT. As checked October 20, 2026, OpenAI says personal accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs, while eligible managed workspaces have different permissions. Existing GPTs remain usable until the scheduled December 11, 2026 retirement, and OpenAI recommends migrating them to Plugins. Check the guidance for your own account.
Choose a job you can recognize when it is done well.
- Bring a video idea, the facts you want to use and a script from a similar video.
- Ask for an outline and opening.
- Read the result aloud.
- Give the correction you would make before recording.
Notice whether the next version keeps your point and fixes the awkward line. A polished paragraph is not useful if it makes a claim you cannot support or drops the opinion you wanted to argue. Our writing-in-your-voice guide gives examples of corrections a writer can act on.
Also look at the tasks around the draft. You may want the chosen title, thumbnail and shorter clips to stay connected to the same video. That is a separate reason to choose a creator product.
What can you keep and change?
Check whether you can find your saved drafts, read the preferences being used and correct something that no longer fits. Check the content and output rights in the terms. Access to an account, saved instructions and owning a model are three different promises.
You should also know whether your content is used to train a shared model, whether that choice is optional and what happens if you stop participating. A useful tool makes those choices understandable before you commit your content to it.
Where does Veri fit?
Veri brings your own content, creator tasks and saved preferences into one place. You can work on the script, title, thumbnail or clip you need today, then keep the choices you want to return to. Your Model lets you review and correct preferences about your voice and style, and Keep your preferences explains those controls.
Personal-model participation is a separate opt-in choice. A saved preference or a request to participate does not mean a trained model has been delivered. Veri does not train shared models on your content. Our Privacy policy and Terms explain the current choices and rights.
Try Veri with one writing task and decide whether it saves you work you actually want help with.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still create a custom GPT?
When we checked on October 20, 2026, OpenAI said personal ChatGPT accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro, cannot create or publish new GPTs. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can when their settings allow it, and existing GPTs remain usable.
Is OpenAI retiring custom GPTs?
OpenAI's help pages say custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026, across all ChatGPT plans, and recommend moving those workflows to Plugins. Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral have until February 11, 2027.
Is a custom GPT the same as a personal model?
No. A custom GPT applies the instructions and reference files you set up to each conversation. In Veri, building a personal model is a separate opt-in, apart from the saved preferences you can use today.
Does Veri train AI on my content?
Veri does not train shared models on your content, and data received through platform APIs is not used to train AI models. Personal-model participation is a separate choice you opt into.
